Assistant Senate Majority Leader Andre Cushing to Serve as Member of Energy and Taxation Committees
Augusta – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Andre Cushing (R – Penobscot) will again serve both as a member of leadership and as a committee member during the 128th Maine State Legislature. This session, he will serve on the Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology and the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation.
“It’s important that my constituents have a voice on these committees as we address important issues such as the newly passed additional three percent income tax on successful small businesses and professionals and the high cost of energy in Maine,” said Sen. Cushing. “As a small business owner of 30 years, I understand the weight these issues carry for businesses and I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve on these committees over the next session.”
The Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee oversees all energy policy, including energy resources, efficiency and conservation, insulation; electric industry, including supply, transmission and distribution; natural gas industry; telecommunications industry, including mobile, telephone, internet, broadband and cable television services; E-9-1-1; water and sewer utilities, including district charters; Public Utilities Commission; Office of the Public Advocate; Governor’s Office of Independence and Security; and Efficiency Maine Trust.
The Taxation Committee oversees the Bureau of Revenue Services and State Property Tax Review Board; taxes; tax exemptions and credits; Maine Residents Property Tax Program; property valuation and assessment; tax increment financing; municipal revenue sharing; taxation of unorganized territories and tree growth, along with other current tax issues.
Senator Cushing is currently serving his third term in the Maine State Senate. Prior to being elected to the Maine State Senate, Senator Cushing served two terms in the Maine House of Representatives. He served as Assistant House Majority Leader in the 125th Legislature, and in the 124th Legislature, he served as the ranking Republican member of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor.
He represents District 10 which includes communities in Penobscot County.
