Senator James Hamper Named Chair of Appropriations Committee
Augusta – Senator James Hamper (R-Oxford) will continue to serve as the Chair of the Legislature’s budget writing Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee (AFA) for the 128th Maine State Legislature.
“Serving as Chair of the Appropriations Committee has proven to be a great responsibility that I do not take lightly,” said Sen. Hamper. “Each and every decision made within the committee impacts all Mainers in some way, and I intend to keep that in mind and at the forefront of committee deliberation as we navigate through the upcoming budget negotiation process.”
The Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs has jurisdiction over General Fund appropriations and general fiscal policy. Its responsibilities also include federal funds allocations, special revenue and block grant allocations, the Budget Stabilization Fund, bond issues, financial evaluation of agencies of state government and the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS).
The appointment of Senator Hamper as Chair was made by Senate President Michael Thibodeau (R-Waldo). “Senator Hamper has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the intricacies of state spending. He did a terrific job guiding the committee through the last budget process. The end result was a compromise that best serves the people of Maine. I am confident that he will continue to lead the committee in a civil, professional manor and that he is the best man for the job,” said Sen. Thibodeau.
Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason (R-Androscoggin) added, “In addition to negotiating the last biennial budget, Senator Hamper also has years of experience on the second busiest committee, the Health and Human Services Committee. This gives him a tremendous insight into an area of state government that accounts for a significant portion of the State budget. I am impressed by the manner in which he ran the Appropriations Committee during the 127th Legislature and am confident that he will continue to provide the necessary leadership to bring about important spending reforms in Maine’s social services programs, as well as state government overall.”
Senator Hamper represents Maine Senate District 19 which includes communities in Cumberland and Oxford Counties.
