FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public Hearing Scheduled for Rumford Water District Bill

The Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee has scheduled a public hearing for Legislative Document 90, “An Act To Amend the Charter of the Rumford Water District,” at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31. The hearing will be located in Cross Building Room 211, which is across from the State House.

Sponsored by Senator Lisa Keim (R-Oxford), LD 90 would revise Rumford’s Water Charter to give the citizens  of Rumford a vote on the matter of commercial extraction of water for resale. The bill also includes language to require a minimum participation in the vote.

“There have been many legitimate concerns voiced by Rumford citizens and their neighboring communities with regard to the commercial extraction of water by the Rumford Water District for commercial sale,” Sen. Keim said. “If passed, my legislation will give a voice to the residents of Rumford. I believe it to be the best path forward for both the town and Nestle.”

Senator Keim urges those with concerns to voice their perspectives during the hearing process. Attendees are encouraged to bring 25 copies of testimony along to the hearing with them. For those who can’t make it, feel free to email testimony to Abben Maguire at abben.maguire@legislature.maine.gov.
