AUGUSTA – Nathanael Batson of Fairfield, a senior at Lawrence High School, played the National Anthem on the trumpet in the Maine Senate on Tuesday, April 23. Nathanael was joined by his mother, Yvonne Batson. During his visit he met with Senator Scott Cyrway (R-Kennebec).

“I was so proud to have Nathanael play in the Maine Senate,” said Cyrway. “In spite of being legally blind and having other health struggles throughout his life, he has accomplished so much in just 18 years. Nathanael plays the trumpet at Lawrence, he has also played with the Kennebec Valley Music Educators Association Band and the All-State Band. Most recently, Nathanael was awarded the National Federation of State High School Associations’ National High School Heart of the Arts Award for New England, New York and New Jersey. In winning this award, he is eligible to be the national winner, which will be announced in June.

“I wish Nathanael the best of luck as he pursues a degree in music at the University of Maine next fall.”
