HOUSE: 131ST

Sen. Scott Cyrway of Albion returned to the Maine Senate in November 2024 for a fifth term after serving for two years in the Maine House of Representatives. Representing Senate District 16, which he represented from 2014 until 2022 when he ran for the House due to term limits, the towns of his district today are somewhat different from those of his prior service due to redistricting that took effect in 2022.

A graduate of the University of Maine, Sen. Cyrway earned a degree in life science and agriculture in 1976. He would go on to serve two years as a major in the U.S. Air Force Civil Air Patrol and eventually graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) in 1992.

Before embarking on the path of law enforcement, he spent his early professional career in the agricultural sector, including eight years as a crop and dairy farmer and another eight in cattle breeding. After brief stints in real estate and insurance, he joined the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office as an assistant jail administrator before moving to patrol upon his accreditation by the MCJA.

Sen. Cyrway became one of the most decorated deputy sheriffs in Kennebec County’s history. Serving as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer, he was recognized with the Life Saving and Valor Award in 2010 and the Darryl F. Gates Lifetime Achievement Award from DARE International in 2016. He also earned accolades from the American Legion with its Legislator of the Year award in 2016 and Christian Civic League’s Minuteman Award in 2018.

He is currently a D.A.R.E. Training Coordinator for the State of Maine and is a past member of the Maine Fire Protection Services Commission. During his prior service in the Maine Legislature, he served on the Legislature’s Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee, Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee and the Committee on Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business.

Sen. Cyrway and his wife, Jill, have three children and 12 grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor hiking, fishing, sledding and exploring in his Jeep. He also likes to play guitar and sing.
