Sen. Joseph Martin was elected in November 2024 to his first term in the Maine State Senate. He represents the people of Senate District 19, which includes municipalities in Oxford and Franklin counties.

A native of Rumford, Sen. Martin has a world of experience – literally – through his decades-long career as a miner in the international mineral extraction industry. From the North American continent to the more remote African regions of Zaire, Sierra Leonne, Zimbabwe and Madagascar, he spent much of his time abroad in search of rare earth minerals and gemstones.

Over the course of his mining career, Sen. Martin served in executive management of several publicly traded companies and even owned businesses locally, including his longtime ownership of Rumford’s oldest bar and restaurant, Hotel Rumford. He also spent time lobstering in Harpswell and as an auctioneer for several law firms during the construction and mining offseason.

Leveraging his expertise in natural resources, he was appointed to serve on the Legislature’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee for the 132nd Legislature. Sen. Martin was also appointed to serve on the State and Local Government Committee, which taps his experience as a former member of the Rumford Finance Committee.

Active in his community, Sen. Martin is a member of the Webb River Vally Sportman’s Club, the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association and Cabot Lodge #117 of the Order of Knights of Pythias in Andover. He is a past grange master of Rumford Grange 115 and the longtime chair of the Oxford County Committee of the Maine Republican Party.

Sen. Martin is a graduate of Mexico High School. He lives in Rumford Point with his longtime partner and enjoys the outdoors of Maine.
