Senator Eric Brakey Reminds Constituents to Search Unclaimed Property List, Claim Money

The State Treasurer may be holding unclaimed property which belongs to you

AUGUSTA – Senator Eric Brakey (R-Androscoggin) today announced the addition of more than $11 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund. This property consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners. The last known owner’s information is now available on the Treasurer’s Website: www.maine.gov/unclaimed.

“In all, the Office of the Treasurer has more than $230 million worth of unclaimed property that belongs to the people of Maine,” said Senator Brakey said. “In recent years, people in Auburn, Mechanic Falls, Minot, New Gloucester, and Poland, which make up Senate District 20, have claimed hundreds of thousands of dollars that they didn’t even know they had.

“I encourage everyone to take a moment to search for their name on this list. There could be money out there that belongs to you, and you don’t even know it.”

Unclaimed Property consists of cash and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. It includes, among other items, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, over payments, gift certificates, paid-up life insurance policies, unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, dividends, insurance payments, refunds, savings accounts, stocks and contents of safe deposit boxes.

Millions of dollars are turned over annually to the Treasurer of Maine by entities who cannot locate the owners. If your name is on the list, file your claim electronically at www.maine.gov/upsearch. You do not need to pay anyone to file your claim as filing a claim is both easy and free.
