Senator Andre Cushing Reminds Constituents to Search Unclaimed Property List, Claim Money
The State Treasurer may be holding unclaimed property which belongs to you
AUGUSTA – Senator Andre Cushing (R-Penobscot) today announced the addition of more than $11 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund. This property consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners. The last known owner’s information is now available on the Treasurer’s Website: www.maine.gov/unclaimed.
“In some cases, people have less than $100.00 in unclaimed property, and in some cases it’s a lot more,” Senator Cushing said. “The only way to find out if some of it’s yours is to check the website.
“The State currently has more than $230 million in unclaimed property, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to see if your name is on the list.”
Unclaimed Property consists of cash and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. It includes, among other items, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, over payments, gift certificates, paid-up life insurance policies, unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, dividends, insurance payments, refunds, savings accounts, stocks and contents of safe deposit boxes.
Millions of dollars are turned over annually to the Treasurer of Maine by entities who cannot locate the owners. If your name is on the list, file your claim electronically at www.maine.gov/upsearch. You do not need to pay anyone to file your claim as filing a claim is both easy and free.
