FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Senator Roger Katz Reminds Constituents to Search Unclaimed Property List, Claim Money
The State Treasurer may be holding unclaimed property which belongs to you
AUGUSTA – Senator Roger Katz (R-Kennebec) today announced the addition of more than $11 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund. This property consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners. The last known owner’s information is now available on the Treasurer’s Website: www.maine.gov/unclaimed.
Unclaimed Property consists of cash and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. It includes, among other items, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, over payments, gift certificates, paid-up life insurance policies, unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, dividends, insurance payments, refunds, savings accounts, stocks and contents of safe deposit boxes.
“You have nothing to lose by seeing if your name is on the list,” Senator Katz said. “Over the course of a lifetime, people are involved in countless financial transactions, and it’s possible they never got money that was coming to them. This is the only way to find out if that applies to you, and I would encourage everyone to visit the unclaimed property website.”
Millions of dollars are turned over annually to the Treasurer of Maine by entities who cannot locate the owners. If your name is on the list, file your claim electronically at www.maine.gov/upsearch. You do not need to pay anyone to file your claim as filing a claim is both easy and free.
