Senator Rod Whittemore Reminds Constituents to Search Unclaimed Property List, Claim Money
The State Treasurer may be holding unclaimed property which belongs to you
AUGUSTA – Senator Rod Whittemore (R-Somerset) today announced the addition of over $11 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund. This property consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners. The last known owner’s information is now available on the Treasurer’s Website: www.maine.gov/unclaimed.
“It only takes a few minutes to check the online list to see if some of the unclaimed money belongs to you,” Senator Whittemore said. “A number of my constituents have been pleasantly surprised in the past. That’s why I think everyone should take the time to check the list.”
Unclaimed Property consists of cash and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. It includes, among other items, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, over payments, gift certificates, paid-up life insurance policies, unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, dividends, insurance payments, refunds, savings accounts, stocks and contents of safe deposit boxes.
Millions of dollars are turned over annually to the Treasurer of Maine by entities who cannot locate the owners. If your name is on the list, file your claim electronically at www.maine.gov/upsearch. You do not need to pay anyone to file your claim as filing a claim is both easy and free.
