AUGUSTA – Senator Tom Saviello (R-Franklin) and Representative Russell Black (R-Wilton) today announced the addition of $11.6 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund. This property consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners. The last known owner’s information is now available on the Treasurer’s Website: www.maine.gov/unclaimed.

They urge their constituents to search their names for missing property.

“You or a member of your family may have money on this list and not even know it,” Senator Saviello said. “I have found over $100,000 for one constituent before!”

“You or a member of your family may have money on this list and not even know it,” Rep. Black said. “There’s more than $241 million in unclaimed property, and the only way to see if some of it is yours is by taking a look.”

Unclaimed Property consists of cash and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. It includes, among other items, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, over payments, gift certificates, paid-up life insurance policies, unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, dividends, insurance payments, refunds, savings accounts, stocks and contents of safe deposit boxes.

Millions of dollars are turned over annually to the Treasurer of Maine by entities who cannot locate the owners. If your name is on the list, file your claim electronically at www.maine.gov/upsearch. You do not need to pay anyone to file your claim as filing a claim is both easy and free.
