During the Pandemic Maine Had the “Most Generous” Unemployment Compensation in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Maine has the “most generous” unemployment benefit of any U.S. state. This calculation is based on the average weekly unemployment benefit and the average weekly wage. This “replacement rate” is the share of a worker’s wages that is replaced by unemployment benefits. Maine’s average payout is about 130% of the average wage. This included the additional $600 federal benefit in 2020.
