Legislative Republicans urge Maine BEP to abandon proposed EV mandate

Sen. Brad Farrin, R-Somerset, who is the Senate Republican Lead on the Legislature’s Transportation Committee, talks about the issues surrounding the attempt to mandate the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) in Maine. Known as the “California Rule,” the Advanced Clean Cars II Program would require 43% of all vehicle sales in 2028 to be EVs. (Senate Republican Office/Mike Fern)

Several issues that could have sweeping effects upon Maine’s citizens are either being considered or have recently been decided by unelected bureaucrats in Maine’s Executive Branch. One such issue involves the Advanced Clean Cars II Rule being considered by the Maine Board of Environmental Protection.

“As you have all heard and as you’ve tracked this, obviously, it all started with that seven-person board that had no right to try to overrule the policies and procedures we have here in the Legislature about passing good law,” said Sen. Brad Farrin, R-Somerset, who is also the Senate Republican Lead for the Transportation Committee. “Not only did they try to implement those rules, they did it when like over 80% of the public testimony during their public hearing were opposed to the mandates, the ‘California Rule’ as they refer to it as.”
