FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUSTA – State Senator Paul Davis (R-Piscataquis) has introduced legislation to make it a little easier for people to provide services to family members requiring assistance with daily living.
LD 442, “An Act To Create a Family Caregiver Income Tax Credit,” would provide a tax credit of up to $2,500 for a family caregiver to provide in-home care and support for an eligible adult family member. This tax credit would be available to cover some of the cost of improvements or alterations to the caregiver’s primary residence that allow the eligible family member to remain mobile and independent. It would also cover the purchase or lease of necessary equipment, the cost of a home care aid, transportation and a number of other necessities.
“Maine has the oldest population in the country,” said Sen. Davis. “It’s important that we provide families with as many options as we can to allow our elderly and disabled residents to maintain their independence so they can remain at home and a part of the community for as long as possible. This bill would help ease the financial burden in-home services can incur.”
This bill has been referred to the Committee on Taxation for consideration.
