AUGUSTA – On Tuesday, February 28, two high school students, including Victoria Hamel of Albany Township, were recognized at an awards ceremony in Augusta at the Maine State Archives.

Hamel, a Grade 10 student of the Maine Virtual Academy, won first place in the high school division of the Maine Native American History & Culture Essay Contest for her essay on the innovations of the Wabanaki Confederacy.

Senator Lisa Keim (R-Oxford), a participant in the awards presentation, said “I was honored to be invited to participate in the ceremony recognizing Victoria for her achievement. She should be very proud of this accomplishment.”
