FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUSTA- On Tuesday, June 13, the Maine Senate initially approved Senator Lisa Keim’s (R-Oxford) Rumford Water District bill on a bipartisan vote of 19-16.
LD 90, “An Act To Amend the Charter of the Rumford Water District,” as amended by a Senate Floor amendment and the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee, would give the citizens of Rumford a voice when it comes to water-related issues by allowing them the option to petition City Council to hold elections for vacancies on the Rumford Water District board of trustees rather than have these positions be appointed.
“There have been many legitimate concerns expressed by Rumford citizens and their neighboring communities with regard to the Rumford Water District’s consideration of commercial water extraction contracts,” Sen. Keim said. “If passed, this legislation will revise the Water Charter to give Rumford residents the choice of who the decision makers will be when it comes to this precious resource.”
LD 90 will now go to the House for consideration.
